Marrakech Airport to the Medina: Taxi, Bus and Private Transfer Explained
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is about 6 km from the medina, a 15–20 minute drive. You can take a taxi from the official rank (agree the fare first; expect roughly 100–150 MAD by day for the medina, more at night), the airport bus to Jemaa el-Fnaa and Gueliz, or a pre-booked private transfer that brings you to the nearest point to your riad, where staff or a porter meet you.
Options compared
| Option | Time | Approximate cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi (petit or grand taxi) | 15–20 min | About 100–150 MAD by day, more at night | Travellers with little luggage |
| Airport bus | 30–40 min | Around 30–40 MAD; check current fare | Budget travellers staying near Jemaa el-Fnaa or Gueliz |
| Private transfer | 15–20 min | Roughly €15–€25 per vehicle | Families, late arrivals, riad stays |

Taxis
Taxis wait outside arrivals. Fares to the medina are often fixed rather than metered at the airport, so agree the price before you load luggage, and pay in dirhams (there are ATMs and exchange counters in the terminal). Taxis cannot drive into most medina lanes, so ask to be dropped at a landmark close to your riad, such as Bab Agnaou, Riad Zitoun or Bab Doukkala.
The airport bus
A city bus line connects the airport with Jemaa el-Fnaa and Gueliz at regular intervals during the day. It is cheap and has space for luggage, but stops near the square still leave you a walk to your accommodation.
Private transfer: the easiest arrival
A driver waits in arrivals with a name sign and takes you to the closest point to your hotel or riad; most riads send someone to guide you through the lanes. This is particularly worthwhile after a late flight, with children or with heavy bags. Many travellers combine the airport pickup with a first excursion, for example an Agafay desert sunset dinner on the evening of arrival.
