Chefchaouen sits at around 600 m in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, famous for the blue-washed walls of its medina. It is a compact, calm town: the Outa el Hammam square, the red-walled kasbah and a short walk up to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint are the highlights, along with local goat cheese and woven blankets.

Chefchaouen is 3.5-4 hours by road from Fes, which makes it a realistic day trip. Our Chefchaouen day trip from Fes leaves in the morning, gives you several hours to wander the blue lanes, and returns to Fes in the evening. Before or after, explore the old city on our guided tour of the Fes medina.

Best time to visit: April to June and September to October. Winters are cool and rainy.
