What is the Agafay Desert?

The Agafay Desert is a stone desert of rolling, golden hills about 40 km south-west of Marrakech, between the city and the High Atlas Mountains. It is not a sand-dune desert like the Sahara, but it gives you the same silence, wide horizons and spectacular sunsets, with snow-capped Atlas peaks in the background from November to April.

Because it is only 45 minutes from Marrakech, Agafay is the easiest way to experience the Moroccan desert in a half day: you are picked up at your hotel or riad in the afternoon, ride a quad bike or a camel at sunset, have dinner with a live show at a Berber-style camp, and are back in Marrakech the same night.

Things to do in Agafay

Agafay or the Sahara (Merzouga)?

Choose Agafay if you have limited time: it is a half day, from €25, with no long drive. Choose the Sahara (Merzouga or Zagora) if you want real orange sand dunes and a night in a desert camp: it needs 2 to 3 days from Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas, Ait Benhaddou and the Dades and Todra gorges. Many travellers do both: Agafay for a first evening, the Sahara for the full desert adventure.

Good to know before you go

• Best time: October to May. In summer (June–September) the tours start later to enjoy the cooler sunset hours.
• Bring: a light jacket (evenings get cold in winter), sunglasses, closed shoes for quad biking, and a scarf for the dust.
• Pickup: from your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the afternoon (time depends on the season, so you ride at sunset); back in Marrakech the same evening.
• Families: children are welcome on camel rides and at dinner, with a reduced price. Ask us on WhatsApp about age limits for quad biking.
