Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Moroccan Desert Should You Choose?
Merzouga has the big dunes, Zagora is closer. A straight comparison of distance, scenery, camps and cost to help you pick the right desert trip.
A short desert escape: cross the High Atlas, visit Ait Benhaddou and the Draa Valley palm groves, then ride a camel to a desert camp near Zagora.
If you only have two days, Zagora is the realistic way to spend a night in the desert from Marrakech. The town lies around 360 km south-east of the city, on the edge of the Draa Valley, which is roughly 7 to 8 hours away with stops. Merzouga is much further, so it needs a minimum of three days.
The drive crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) and stops at the fortified village of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. After Ouarzazate the road climbs again over the Anti-Atlas at the Tizi n'Tinififft pass before descending to Agdz. From there it follows the Draa Valley, where the Draa, Morocco's longest river, feeds an almost continuous ribbon of date palms and mud-brick kasbahs. At the end of the day you ride a camel for about an hour to a Berber camp for dinner around the fire and a night in a tent.
The dunes near Zagora are real sand dunes but they are smaller and more scattered than the tall, continuous sand sea of Erg Chebbi. What you gain is time: this trip gives you the High Atlas crossing, a kasbah visit, the Draa palm groves and a desert night in 48 hours. If big dunes are your priority and you can spare an extra day, choose our 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech to Merzouga instead. Our Sahara Desert destination guide explains the differences between Morocco's desert regions in more detail.
