Ouirgane travel guide
Where is Ouirgane?
Ouirgane is a Berber village and rural commune of Al Haouz province, at about 1,000 m of altitude in the High Atlas. It sits on the Nfis river, at the edge of Toubkal National Park, roughly 65 km south of Marrakech on the R203 road (the Tizi n'Test road) — about 1h15 to 1h30 by car via Tahanaout and Asni.
Things to do in Ouirgane
- Hike to Berber villages — easy half-day loops between hamlets, terraced fields, olive, almond and fig trees, or longer walks towards Imlil over two or three days.
- The Nfis river and the dam lake — the Yacoub El Mansour dam has created a lake just below the village; the river banks are perfect for a quiet picnic.
- Weekly markets — Ouirgane has a small Thursday souk, and the much bigger Saturday souk of Asni is 15 km away.
- Tinmel — further up the Nfis valley stands the 12th-century Tinmel Mosque, cradle of the Almohad dynasty. It was badly damaged in the September 2023 earthquake and is being restored, so ask us about access before you go.
- Riding, cycling and birdwatching — several guesthouses in the valley offer horse riding and bikes, and the river attracts storks, bee-eaters and many songbirds in spring.
Ouirgane guided hikes & trekking
Want to walk more? On request we organise longer Ouirgane guided hikes from village to village, and Ouirgane trekking routes of two to three days towards Imlil and the Toubkal massif. Every Marrakech to Ouirgane private excursion can be adapted: a shorter walk for families, a longer hike for active travellers, or a Berber villages tour with more cultural stops.
Best time to visit
Spring (March to May) is the greenest season, with almond and fruit trees in bloom. Autumn (September to November) is mild and clear. Summer days are hot but cooler than in Marrakech, and winter brings cold nights and snow on the peaks.
Ouirgane, Imlil or Ourika?
Ourika is the closest valley to Marrakech and the busiest. Imlil is the base for Mount Toubkal and is more alpine. Ouirgane is quieter, wider and greener — ideal if you want authentic village life, easy walks and a slow day away from the crowds.
