Hiking the Atlas Mountains: Best Routes from Easy Day Hikes to Multi-Day Treks
Where to go hiking in the Atlas Mountains, from easy day walks near Marrakech to Toubkal and multi-day valley treks, with seasons, guides and what to pack.
Explore the Asni, Imlil and Ouirgane valleys below Jebel Toubkal, walk with a mountain guide to the village of Aroumd and share a home-cooked lunch.
Imlil is the trailhead for Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak, and the most rewarding place near Marrakech to experience the High Atlas on foot. The village sits at about 1,740 m, roughly 65 km and 1 hour 30 minutes from the city, at the head of a valley of walnut orchards, apple terraces and stone-and-earth hamlets. This small-group day trip links three contrasting valleys and includes a guided walk and a home-cooked lunch.
The road climbs through the red Moulay Brahim gorge into the Asni valley, a farming area whose Saturday market draws people from the surrounding villages. Continuing up to Imlil, you meet a local mountain guide for a walk of around two to two and a half hours return along mule tracks to Aroumd (about 1,900 m), one of the highest villages in the valley, facing the Toubkal massif. Along the way the guide explains the irrigation channels, the crops and daily life in the mountains, and there is time for mint tea on a village terrace.
Lunch is served in a Berber family home: typically salads, a vegetable or chicken tagine, bread from the clay oven and fruit. In the afternoon we drive to the quieter Ouirgane valley, where the Nfis river runs between pine-covered slopes and red earth, before heading back to Marrakech.
The walk is at a steady pace on uneven paths with a climb of roughly 200 metres, suitable for anyone with average fitness. If you prefer a gentler outing, the Ourika Valley day trip is closer and flatter; if you want to reach the summit, see our 2-day Mount Toubkal trek. More ideas are in our Atlas Mountains guide.
