Imlil is a mountain village at about 1,740 m in the High Atlas, roughly 65 km and approximately 1 hour 30 minutes' drive south of Marrakech. It is the trailhead for Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak, and the best base for day walks between Berber villages such as Aroumd. A guided day trip with a village walk and a home-cooked lunch is the easiest way to experience it.

Where is Imlil?

Imlil lies at the head of the Rheraya Valley, inside Toubkal National Park, which was created in 1942 and is Morocco's oldest national park. The road from Marrakech crosses the Haouz plain, passes the red rock gorge of Moulay Brahim and the market town of Asni, and then climbs a winding valley to Imlil, where the tarmac more or less ends.

  • Distance from Marrakech: approximately 65 km.
  • Drive time: approximately 1h30.
  • Altitude: Imlil approximately 1,740 m; Aroumd approximately 1,900 m; Toubkal refuge approximately 3,200 m.

The village itself is small: a main street with guesthouses, gear-hire shops, cafés and mule stations, surrounded by walnut and cherry orchards and terraced fields irrigated by stone channels.

What can you do in Imlil?

Walk to Aroumd

The classic short walk climbs mule tracks from Imlil to Aroumd (also spelled Aremd), the largest village in the valley, built on a rocky spur above a flat, stony flood plain. It takes approximately 1 hour up and 45 minutes down, with views straight up the valley towards the Toubkal massif. It is suitable for most people with reasonable fitness.

Three valleys circuit

Longer walks link Imlil with neighbouring valleys. A popular loop crosses the Tizi n'Mzik pass (approximately 2,489 m) towards the Azzaden valley, a demanding full day. Guides can shape routes of 2 to 7 hours depending on your fitness and the season.

Visit a Berber family home

Lunch or mint tea with a local family is a highlight: flat bread baked in a clay oven, salads, vegetable or chicken tagine and seasonal fruit. It is also a direct way to support the village economy.

Climb Mount Toubkal

Imlil is the starting point for the Toubkal ascent. The standard route takes two days: day one hiking 5-6 hours via the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch to the refuge at about 3,200 m, and day two climbing 3-4 hours to the 4,167 m summit before descending. Since 2019, trekkers must be accompanied by a certified guide on Toubkal. Our team can organise the full two-day trek from Marrakech on request.

Best time to visit Imlil

SeasonDaytime temperature in Imlil (approx.)Conditions

Summer (June-August)25-30°CPleasant escape from Marrakech heat; hot on exposed slopes at midday.
Autumn (September-October)18-25°CWalnut and apple harvest, stable weather, clear views.
Winter (November-March)5-12°CSnow possible in the village; high routes need winter equipment.

Nights are much colder than in Marrakech in every season, so bring a warm layer even in summer.

Imlil and the 2023 earthquake

The earthquake of 8 September 2023, centred in the Al Haouz province, caused significant damage in Imlil and nearby villages. Reconstruction has been under way since, and the valley has reopened to visitors, whose spending supports the recovery. Some paths and buildings may still be affected, so check current conditions before you travel; local guides know which routes are open.

What to pack for an Imlil day walk

  • Walking shoes or light boots with good grip; paths are rocky and can be muddy.
  • Layers: a fleece or light down jacket, plus a waterproof in spring and winter.
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; the sun is strong at altitude.
  • At least 1.5 litres of water per person.
  • Cash in small dirham notes for drinks and tips (approximately 50-100 MAD per group for a guide is common, at your discretion).
  • Modest clothing: cover shoulders and knees in the villages.

Do you need a guide in Imlil?

For the short walk to Aroumd on a clear day, a guide is not legally required, but it is strongly recommended if you do not know the area: paths branch frequently, mule tracks cross streambeds, and weather changes quickly at altitude. For Toubkal and higher passes, a certified guide is compulsory. Hiring a local guide also keeps money in the valley. Official mountain guides can show a card issued by the authorities; the bureau des guides in Imlil can help arrange one if you are travelling independently.

Where to stay if you want more than a day

Imlil and Aroumd have simple guesthouses (gîtes) and a few more comfortable lodges, notably the Kasbah du Toubkal on the hill above the village. Staying overnight lets you see the valley at sunrise and do a longer walk the next day. Remember that facilities are basic in the smaller gîtes, and heating is limited in winter.

Is Imlil worth it?

If you want to walk rather than just look at the mountains, Imlil is the best day trip from Marrakech. The scenery is bigger and wilder than in the lower valleys, and a village lunch gives real contact with Amazigh mountain life.
