Ourika Valley or Imlil? Choosing the Best Atlas Day Trip From Marrakech

Mountain valley near Imlil with Berber villages below the Toubkal massif

Choose the Ourika Valley if you want the closest and easiest Atlas outing (about 1 hour from Marrakech), with riverside villages, a Berber house visit and a short scramble to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. Choose Imlil if you want higher, more dramatic mountain scenery at the foot of Toubkal (about 1.5 hours away), quieter trails and longer walks between Berber villages.

When to go

Both valleys are lovely from March to June and September to November. In summer they offer cooler air than Marrakech; in winter Imlil can have snow. Avoid the Ourika riverbed after storms, as flash floods can occur; check the Moroccan meteorological service before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Ourika or Imlil?

Ourika is closer and easier with waterfalls; Imlil has higher, more dramatic mountains and better hiking. Choose by your time and fitness.

Is the Ourika Valley worth it?

Yes for a short, easy taste of the Atlas with river scenery and waterfalls, though it can be busy on weekends.

Can you see Mount Toubkal from Imlil?

The Toubkal massif rises above Imlil; the summit itself is hidden behind nearer peaks from the village, but visible from some viewpoints on hikes.

Can I do both Ourika and Imlil in one day?

It is not practical: they are in different valleys. Choose one, or book two separate day trips.
