Climbing Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa, is usually done in two days from the village of Imlil, 1h30 from Marrakech: 5-6 hours up to the refuge at about 3,200 m on day one, then a pre-dawn summit push of 3-4 hours and a long descent on day two. In summer it is a non-technical but demanding high-altitude hike; from roughly December to April it requires crampons, an ice axe and winter experience, and a licensed guide is required for foreign trekkers.

Where is Toubkal and how do you get there?

Jebel Toubkal lies in the Toubkal National Park in the High Atlas, about 65 km south of Marrakech. The trailhead is Imlil (around 1,740 m), reached in about 1h30 by road via Tahannaout and Asni. There is no public road beyond Imlil, so everything above is on foot or by mule.

What is the standard route like?

Day 1: Imlil to the Toubkal refuge

From Imlil the path climbs through walnut groves to the village of Aroumd (about 1,900 m), crosses a wide gravel flood plain and follows the Mizane valley. After around 2-3 hours you pass the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (about 2,350 m), a pilgrimage site with small drink stalls. The trail then zigzags steadily up to the refuges at about 3,200 m. Total: roughly 11-12 km, 5-6 hours and around 1,450 m of ascent.

Day 2: summit and descent

You leave by torchlight, typically between 04:00 and 05:00, to reach the summit around sunrise. The climb gains nearly 1,000 m over scree and rocky slopes to the Tizi n'Toubkal col and along the ridge to the summit tripod. On a clear morning you see the whole High Atlas and, to the south, the Anti-Atlas towards the Sahara. You then descend to the refuge for a meal and continue all the way down to Imlil - a total day of around 10-12 hours on foot.

How hard is climbing Mount Toubkal?

In summer conditions the route requires no climbing skills, but it should not be underestimated. The main challenges are:

  • Altitude. Above 3,000 m many people feel headaches, breathlessness or nausea. Going slowly, drinking plenty of water and sleeping at the refuge before the summit all help. If symptoms worsen, descend.
  • Scree. Loose stones on the upper slopes make every step tiring, especially on the way down.
  • Length. Day two is long, with around 1,000 m of ascent and 2,400 m of descent.

If you can comfortably hike 6-8 hours with a daypack in hilly terrain, you are likely fit enough. Adding a third day - for example, sleeping in Imlil the night before or adding an acclimatisation walk - improves both your chances and your enjoyment.

When is the best time to climb Toubkal?

  • Late May to October - usually snow-free, the standard trekking season. July and August are hot in the valleys but pleasant high up; nights at the refuge remain cool.
  • April and early May, late October and November - often excellent, with fewer people, but snow patches and cold snaps are possible.
  • December to March - a winter mountaineering objective. Expect snow and ice, temperatures well below freezing at the summit, and the need for crampons, ice axe and experience or specialised guiding.

Do you need a guide?

Yes. Since 2019 the Moroccan authorities have required foreign trekkers in the Toubkal area to be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide, and checkpoints may ask for proof. Rules can change, so confirm when you book. Beyond the requirement, a local guide knows the weather patterns, sets a sustainable pace and arranges mules and refuge beds.

Two days or three?

The two-day format suits fit hikers who already have some experience at altitude. A three-day plan - an extra night in Imlil or a gentler first day with lunch at Sidi Chamharouch - gives your body more time to adjust and reduces the risk of altitude headaches on summit morning. It also leaves a margin if the weather closes in on the planned summit day. If you are unsure, the extra day is almost always worth it.

Costs to budget beyond the trek

  • Sleeping bag and, in shoulder seasons, crampon rental in Imlil: approximately a few hundred MAD
  • Drinks and snacks at the refuge and at Sidi Chamharouch
  • Tips for your guide and muleteer, a customary gesture of thanks

Where do you sleep?

At around 3,200 m there are two refuges: the Refuge du Toubkal (run by the Club Alpin Français) and the Refuge Les Mouflons. Both offer shared dormitories, hot meals and basic washing facilities. Beds fill up in spring and autumn weekends, so they should be reserved in advance.

What to pack for Toubkal

  • Broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support
  • Warm layers: fleece, insulated jacket, windproof shell, hat and gloves - even in August the summit can be near freezing at dawn
  • Head torch with spare batteries
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm
  • Two litres of water capacity and purification tablets
  • Sleeping bag (can be rented in Imlil) and a light sleeping-bag liner
  • Trekking poles - very helpful on scree
  • Travel insurance that explicitly covers trekking above 4,000 m
