Ouarzazate lies south of the High Atlas, about 4 hours from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m). Known as the gateway to the desert, it is home to the Taourirt Kasbah and large film studios, and is close to Ait Benhaddou, a fortified earthen village (ksar) listed by UNESCO that has appeared in many films and series.
Our Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate day trip is a long but spectacular day: mountain scenery on the way, a guided walk through the ksar and time in Ouarzazate before returning to Marrakech. If you are heading to the dunes, the 3-day Sahara tour passes the same route with more time to stop.
Best time to visit: spring and autumn. Summer is very hot, and winter can bring snow on the Tichka pass.
