Ait Benhaddou Guide: Visiting Morocco's Famous Ksar and Film Location
How to visit Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen ksar on the old caravan route: history, film locations, the drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and practical tips.
Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m to explore the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Benhaddou with a local guide, then continue to Ouarzazate, gateway to the Sahara.
Ait Benhaddou is the most famous fortified village in Morocco: a cluster of earthen kasbahs and houses stacked up a hillside above the Ounila river, on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987 and has appeared in productions such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. It lies about 190 km from Marrakech, around 4 hours each way with photo stops, so this is a long but rewarding day.
The drive itself is a highlight. The N9 road winds up through Berber villages and walnut groves to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, one of the highest road passes in Morocco, with views across the ridges of the High Atlas. On the southern side the landscape turns dry and mineral, with red and green-grey hills and ribbons of oasis in the valleys.
At Ait Benhaddou a local guide takes you across the river and through the lanes of the ksar, explaining how the mud-brick buildings are made and maintained, before you climb to the old communal granary at the top for a sweeping view of the valley. After lunch, we continue 30 km to Ouarzazate, known for its film studios, where you can see the Taourirt Kasbah, a former Glaoui residence, from the outside or visit it for a small entrance fee. Atlas Film Studios is an optional visit if time allows. The return to Marrakech crosses the pass again in the late afternoon light.
If you would like to go further and spend a night in the Sahara, the 2-day Zagora desert trip follows the same road and adds the Draa Valley. Our Ouarzazate destination guide has more on the region's kasbahs.
