Full description

The Ourika Valley is the closest slice of the High Atlas to Marrakech. The road leaves the palm groves of the Haouz plain and follows the Ourika river into a green, steep-sided valley lined with walnut trees, terraced fields and adobe villages. The drive to Setti Fatma, the last village at the end of the paved road at around 1,500 m, takes about an hour, which leaves plenty of time on foot.

Along the valley

On the way up we stop at a traditional Berber house, where a family shows how the home is organised around its courtyard and serves mint tea with bread and local olive oil. Next comes a women's cooperative producing argan oil, where you can see the nuts being cracked and ground by hand and learn the difference between culinary and cosmetic oil. There is no obligation to buy anything.

The Setti Fatma waterfalls

In Setti Fatma a local mountain guide leads the walk up to the first of the valley's seven waterfalls. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes each way, crossing the river on small bridges and scrambling over boulders in places, and there are cafés beside the pools for a drink. Lunch is at one of the riverside restaurants, where tables are sometimes set on platforms right above the water. You return to Marrakech in the late afternoon.

This is a good first taste of the mountains for families and travellers short on time. For a higher, more rugged setting with views of Jebel Toubkal, see our Imlil and Three Valleys Atlas day trip, or read more about the region in our Atlas Mountains guide.
