The Best Day Trips from Marrakech: Mountains, Waterfalls, Coast and Kasbahs
The best day trips from Marrakech are the Ourika Valley (about 1 hour away), Imlil and the High Atlas (about 1.5 hours), the Ouzoud Falls (about 150 km, 2.5 to 3 hours), Essaouira on the Atlantic coast (about 190 km, roughly 3 hours) and Ait Benhaddou (around 4 hours each way over the Tizi n'Tichka pass). For a first mountain trip with little driving, Ourika is the easiest choice; for a change of scene, Essaouira; for the most dramatic landscapes, Ait Benhaddou.

1. Ourika Valley: the closest escape
The Ourika Valley follows a river into the High Atlas south of Marrakech. The paved road ends at Setti Fatma, at around 1,500 m, where a walk of about 30 to 45 minutes each way leads to the first of a series of seven waterfalls. Along the way are Berber villages, walnut trees, terraced fields and argan oil cooperatives. It is ideal for families and for anyone who wants mountain air without much driving. Our Ourika Valley and Atlas Mountains day trip includes a Berber house visit, a cooperative and a guided waterfall walk. For more detail, read our full Ourika Valley guide.
2. Imlil and the High Atlas
Imlil sits at around 1,740 m at the foot of Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak. It is the trailhead for Toubkal climbs, but it is also perfect for a day of walking between Amazigh villages such as Aroumd, with mule tracks, apple and walnut orchards and big mountain views. Expect more hiking than in Ourika. Our guide to Imlil and the Atlas villages explains the best walks.
3. Ouzoud Falls
At roughly 110 m, the Cascades d'Ouzoud are the highest waterfalls in Morocco. The walk down from the village of Tanaghmeilt takes about 20 to 30 minutes through olive groves, and you can take a small boat towards the spray at the bottom. Barbary macaques live along the gorge. Spring brings the strongest flow. See our dedicated Ouzoud waterfalls guide for timings and tips.
4. Essaouira
This laid-back fishing port on the Atlantic has a walled medina listed by UNESCO in 2001, busy fishing harbour, ramparts (the Skala) and a long beach popular with kitesurfers. It is usually several degrees cooler than Marrakech in summer, which makes it a welcome break. The drive passes argan country, and many trips stop at an argan cooperative. Note that the famous "goats in trees" near the road are often placed there for photographs; a tip is expected if you stop.
5. Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate
The longest classic day trip crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m to reach the fortified ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987 and a location for many films and series. Some trips continue to Ouarzazate and its film studios. It is a long day of 11 to 12 hours, but it gives a real taste of the south if you cannot make the full desert trip.
6. Agafay desert
A stony desert of bare hills about 45 minutes from the city, Agafay is best at sunset, with camel rides and dinner in a camp and views of the Atlas. It has no sand dunes, but it is a lovely half-day.
Other options worth knowing
- Lalla Takerkoust: a reservoir about 40 km from Marrakech, often combined with Agafay.
- Ouirgane: a green valley on the road to the Tizi n'Test, with quiet guesthouses.
- Amizmiz: a market town in the Atlas foothills with a Tuesday souk.
Which day trip should you choose?
- Only one free day and travelling with children: Ourika Valley.
- You love walking: Imlil.
- You want nature and a picnic-style day: Ouzoud Falls.
- You need a break from the heat and the medina: Essaouira.
- You want dramatic landscapes and kasbahs: Ait Benhaddou.
Practical tips for day trips from Marrakech
- Most trips leave between 07:30 and 09:00 and include hotel or riad pickup; in the medina, the driver may meet you at the nearest accessible point.
- Carry dirhams for lunch (approximately 80 to 150 MAD per person), optional local guides and tips.
- Wear comfortable shoes with grip for Ourika, Imlil and Ouzoud.
- In summer, prefer the mountains or the coast; in winter, the Atlas can be cold and roads occasionally affected by snow.
- Shared tours are the budget choice; private tours give flexible timing.

Shared or private day trip?
Shared trips run in air-conditioned minibuses with a fixed programme and are the most economical way to travel. Private trips cost more per group but let you set the pace, add stops, avoid peak hours at popular sites and combine destinations, for example Agafay with Lalla Takerkoust, or Ourika with a visit to a quieter side valley. For groups of four or more, the price difference per person is often smaller than people expect.
Can you combine two destinations in one day?
Some combinations work well because the places are close together: Agafay and Lalla Takerkoust, or Imlil and the Asni Saturday market. Others, such as Essaouira and Ouzoud, lie in opposite directions and cannot be combined in one day. As a rule, keep total driving under six hours if you want time to enjoy the destination.
