Lalla Takerkoust Lake: A Half-Day Escape From Marrakech

Turquoise water of Lalla Takerkoust Lake with the Atlas Mountains behind

Lalla Takerkoust is a reservoir lake about 40 km south-west of Marrakech, roughly 45 minutes by car, at the foot of the High Atlas and next to the Agafay desert. Visitors come for lakeside lunches with mountain views, walks, kayaking and other water activities (subject to water levels), and to combine the lake with a sunset in Agafay.

What to do at Lalla Takerkoust

  • Lunch with a view: several lakeside restaurants and guesthouses serve tagines and grilled fish on terraces facing the Atlas.
  • Kayaking and paddle-boarding: offered by some lakeside operators when the water level allows.
  • Walks and photography: the shoreline, the dam and the surrounding villages are beautiful in the morning and late afternoon.
  • Quad biking and camel rides: the Agafay plateau is right next to the lake.
  • Agafay sunset: end the day with dinner and a show in the desert; see the Agafay sunset camel ride with dinner.

A note on water levels

The lake is a reservoir built in the 1930s, and its level depends on rain and snow in the Atlas. After dry years, it can shrink significantly and some water activities may stop. Ask locally or check recent photos before planning a water-focused day.

Lalla Takerkoust or Ouirgane?

If you are looking for a lake and kayaking in the mountains, the Ouirgane valley, about an hour from Marrakech, offers a greener setting with Berber villages and forests. Our Ouirgane day trip with kayaking is led by guides from the valley. Lalla Takerkoust is closer and easier to combine with Agafay.

How to get there

The lake is reached by the road towards Amizmiz. There is no convenient public transport, so most visitors come by taxi, rental car or as part of an organised trip. Combining it with an Agafay desert outing makes the most of the drive.

Best time to go

Spring and autumn are ideal. In summer, the lake is popular with Marrakech families on weekends looking for cooler air; go on a weekday morning.
