Hiking the Atlas Mountains: Best Routes from Easy Day Hikes to Multi-Day Treks
Where to go hiking in the Atlas Mountains, from easy day walks near Marrakech to Toubkal and multi-day valley treks, with seasons, guides and what to pack.
A private day in Ouirgane, our home valley in the High Atlas: kayaking on the lake, a guided walk through Berber villages and the Nfis valley, with hotel pickup from Marrakech.
Ouirgane is a green valley in the High Atlas, about 60 km south of Marrakech on the road to the Tizi n'Test pass, and it is where our team comes from. Surrounded by juniper and pine forests, red-earth Berber villages and the waters of the Ouirgane lake, it is a peaceful alternative to the busier valleys around Marrakech.
After a scenic drive through Tahannaout and Asni, you reach the Ouirgane lake, framed by the mountains. With your guide you paddle for about an hour on calm water: kayaks, paddles and life jackets are provided and no experience is needed.
Then a local guide takes you on foot through the valley: Berber villages, terraced gardens and olive groves along the Nfis river, and the traditional salt pans that have been worked here for generations. There is time for lunch in the village and a mint tea before driving back to Marrakech.
This is a private trip for your group only: €110 for 1 person, and each extra person adds just €10 (2 people €120, 3 people €130, 4 people €140, and so on). Learn more about the area on our Ouirgane page.
