Akchour Waterfalls: Hiking to God's Bridge From Chefchaouen

Turquoise river and waterfall at Akchour in the Rif Mountains

Akchour is a natural area in the Rif Mountains about 30 km (around 45 minutes) from Chefchaouen, in the Talassemtane National Park. Two trails start from the same car park: one follows the river to the Grand Waterfall (about 2–3 hours return), the other climbs to God's Bridge (Pont de Dieu), a natural rock arch (about 1.5–2 hours return). Both pass turquoise pools where many visitors swim in summer.

The two main hikes

To the Grand Waterfall

The trail follows the river upstream, crossing small bridges and passing cafés and pools, to a waterfall of about 20 m. The path is rocky and slippery in places, with some scrambling near the end. Allow 2–3 hours return plus swimming time.

To God's Bridge

Turn right after the dam and follow the path up the slope to a viewpoint over the arch, about 25 m high, carved by the river. A path continues down to the water below it. Allow 1.5–2 hours return.

Practical tips

  • Wear shoes with good grip that can get wet; flip-flops are risky on the rocks.
  • Bring water, sun protection and cash for drinks or a tagine at the riverside cafés.
  • Avoid weekends in summer, when local visitors crowd the pools.
  • After heavy rain, rivers can rise quickly: do not cross fast-flowing water.
  • Take your rubbish back with you.

Best time to visit

Late spring to early autumn for swimming; spring for the strongest waterfalls and green landscapes. Winter can be cold and wet.

Getting there

Shared and private grand taxis leave from Chefchaouen. Visitors based in Fes can combine Akchour with the blue city on a long private day trip; our Chefchaouen day trip from Fes focuses on the medina and can be extended on request. Read our Chefchaouen guide to plan your stay.
