Ait Benhaddou Guide: Visiting Morocco's Famous Ksar and Film Location
Ait Benhaddou is a fortified earthen village (ksar) on the southern side of the High Atlas, about 190 km and roughly four hours' drive from Marrakech via the 2,260 m Tizi n'Tichka pass. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, it is one of the best-preserved examples of southern Moroccan mud-brick architecture and has appeared in films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
What is Ait Benhaddou?
A ksar (plural ksour) is a fortified village of earthen houses, granaries, a mosque and public spaces, enclosed by defensive walls and towers. Ait Benhaddou stands on a hill above the Ounila River, on the old caravan route that linked the Sahara with Marrakech across the Atlas. Traders carrying salt, gold, dates and other goods passed through the valley for centuries, which explains why a settlement of this size grew here.
The buildings are made of rammed earth (pisé) and adobe mixed with straw, which means they need constant maintenance: heavy rain erodes the walls. The oldest surviving structures are thought to date from around the 17th century, although the site is older. Most families moved to the modern village across the river during the 20th century, and only a handful still live inside the ksar today, many of them running shops and cafés.
What to see in Ait Benhaddou
- The river crossing: you reach the ksar by a footbridge over the Ounila, or by stepping stones when the water is low.
- The lanes and kasbahs: narrow, climbing alleys lead past fortified family houses with decorated towers. Some residents open their homes for a small fee (approximately 10-20 MAD).
- The granary (agadir) at the top: the ruined collective granary crowns the hill. The climb takes about 15-20 minutes and rewards you with views over the palm grove, the valley and, in winter, the snowy Atlas.
- Artists' workshops: a few local painters use saffron, tea and indigo to create pictures that appear when heated over a flame, a popular souvenir.
- The view from across the river: the classic postcard photo is taken from the modern village side, especially at sunset.
Ait Benhaddou in films and TV
Its dramatic silhouette has made Ait Benhaddou one of the most filmed places in Morocco. Productions shot here or in the immediate surroundings include Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Jesus of Nazareth (1977), The Jewel of the Nile (1985), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000) and Game of Thrones, where it stood in for the city of Yunkai. Film crews have occasionally restored or added elements, such as the gate near the river built for a film set.
How to get to Ait Benhaddou from Marrakech
The route over the Tizi n'Tichka
The N9 road climbs from the Haouz plain into the High Atlas, through Berber villages and walnut groves, to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, the highest major road pass in Morocco. On the southern side the landscape turns abruptly dry and red. The ksar lies about 30 km before Ouarzazate, on a short side road.
- Distance: approximately 190 km each way.
- Drive time: approximately 3h30-4 hours each way with photo stops; the mountain road is winding.
- Winter: snow occasionally closes the pass for a few hours between December and March; operators monitor the road conditions.
Day trip or overnight?
Ait Benhaddou is a long but very doable day trip. Our Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate day trip picks you up at 07:00, stops at the Tichka pass, includes a local guide in the ksar and returns to Marrakech in the evening, from €39 per person. If you prefer a slower pace, the ksar is also a stop on multi-day routes to the Sahara, with the chance to sleep in a guesthouse facing the ksar and see it at sunrise.
Ouarzazate: the "door of the desert"
Ouarzazate, about 30 km beyond Ait Benhaddou, is the main town of the region, sitting at approximately 1,150 m. It is home to the Atlas Film Studios, one of the largest film studios in Africa, where you can tour sets used in international productions (entry approximately 80-100 MAD at the time of writing; check current prices). The Taourirt Kasbah, a former residence of the Glaoui family, is also open to visitors in the town centre.
Alternative route via Telouet
Just after the Tichka pass, a narrower road branches east to Telouet and down the Ounila Valley to Ait Benhaddou. Telouet has the decaying kasbah of the Glaoui, the powerful "lords of the Atlas", with remarkably preserved painted ceilings and tilework. The road is now paved but slower, adding about an hour. It is a great option on a private trip.

Is Ait Benhaddou worth visiting?
Absolutely. It combines one of Morocco's most spectacular mountain drives with a genuinely historic site. If you have only a day, it is the best way to glimpse the landscapes of the south without committing to the Sahara. If you have more time, it pairs naturally with the desert.
