The best things to do in Essaouira are walking the Skala de la Ville ramparts, watching the fishing boats come into the port, eating grilled fish at the harbour, exploring the UNESCO-listed medina and its thuya-wood workshops, and walking or kitesurfing on the long windy beach. Essaouira is about 190 km west of Marrakech, roughly three hours by road, so it works as a full day trip or a relaxed overnight.

Why visit Essaouira?

Essaouira is a fortified port on the Atlantic, laid out in the 1760s for Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah by the French engineer Théodore Cornut. Its grid of white and blue streets, European-style bastions and busy harbour made it Morocco's main trading port with Europe for a century. The medina was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Today it is smaller, calmer and breezier than Marrakech, with summer temperatures usually around 22-26°C thanks to the trade winds, when Marrakech can be 15°C hotter.

The top things to do in Essaouira

1. Walk the Skala de la Ville ramparts

The sea bastion on the north-west side of the medina is lined with 18th- and 19th-century bronze cannons pointing at the ocean. Waves break against the rocks below, and the views along the coast are best in the late afternoon. Fans of Game of Thrones may recognise it as a filming location for Astapor.

2. Watch the fishing port at work

Just outside the medina walls, the harbour is one of the most photogenic working ports in Morocco. Hundreds of blue wooden boats unload sardines, sea bream and crabs, while boat builders repair hulls on the quay. Mornings are the liveliest.

3. Climb the Skala du Port

The square harbour fortress offers a raised view back over the boats and the medina. A small entry fee applies (approximately 60 MAD at the time of writing; check at the gate).

4. Eat grilled fish at the port stalls

Between the port and Place Moulay Hassan, grill stalls let you pick fish and seafood from the ice and have it grilled on the spot. Agree the total price, including salad and bread, before cooking starts.

5. Wander the medina

The medina is compact and flat, laid out on a grid, so getting lost is harder than in Fes or Marrakech. Explore the souks off Avenue Mohammed Zerktouni and the old Mellah quarter to the north.

6. Visit the thuya-wood workshops

Under the ramparts, carpenters carve and inlay thuya, a fragrant local wood from the surrounding hills. Boxes, chess sets and bowls make good lightweight souvenirs.

7. Browse the galleries

Essaouira has a strong art scene, with several galleries showing Moroccan painters. Wandering between them is free.

8. Visit Bayt Dakira

Bayt Dakira, a restored house and cultural centre in the old Mellah, tells the story of Essaouira's historic Jewish community, once a large part of the town's population.

9. Walk the beach

The wide sandy beach curves south from the medina for several kilometres. It is more for walking and watersports than sunbathing because of the wind.

10. Try windsurfing or kitesurfing

The trade winds, strongest from spring to late summer, make Essaouira a well-known windsurfing and kitesurfing spot. Schools on the beach rent gear and offer lessons for beginners.

11. Ride a camel or horse on the beach

Short rides along the sand towards the dunes of Diabat are offered at the southern end of the beach. Check the animals look well cared for before you ride.

12. Look out to the Île de Mogador

The island opposite the bay is a protected nature reserve and breeding ground for Eleonora's falcons. It cannot be visited, but you can see it from the beach.

13. Go to Sidi Kaouki

About 25 km south, the small village of Sidi Kaouki is a surf spot with a long, empty beach. It is better for an overnight stay than a day trip.

14. Listen to Gnaoua music

Essaouira is the home of the Gnaoua World Music Festival, usually held in June. Outside festival time, musicians sometimes play in cafés and small venues in the medina.

15. Watch the sunset from a rooftop

End the day with mint tea on a rooftop terrace above the ramparts as the sun drops into the Atlantic.

How long do you need in Essaouira?

A day trip from Marrakech gives you about 4-5 hours in town, which is enough for the ramparts, the port, a seafood lunch and a walk through the medina. Staying one or two nights lets you enjoy quiet mornings at the port, watersports and Sidi Kaouki.
