Full description

At 4,167 m, Jebel Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa and the crown of the High Atlas. The standard southern route is a non-technical walk in summer, but it is long and at real altitude, so this two-day ascent is for fit hikers used to full days on the trail. You are accompanied by a certified mountain guide — mandatory in the Toubkal National Park — with a mule to carry the heavy luggage.

Day 1: Imlil to the Toubkal refuge

From Marrakech it is about 1h30 by road to Imlil (around 1,740 m), the trailhead village. The path climbs through walnut groves to Aroumd, crosses the flood plain and continues up the Mizane valley past the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (about 2,350 m). After roughly 5-6 hours of walking and around 1,450 m of ascent you reach the refuge at about 3,200 m, where you have dinner and sleep in a shared dormitory.

Day 2: summit and descent

You set off before dawn for the 3-4 hour climb over scree slopes and a rocky ridge to the summit, marked by a metal tripod. On a clear day the view stretches across the High Atlas and, in the south, towards the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara's edge. You then descend to the refuge for a meal and continue down to Imlil — a long day of around 10-12 hours on foot in total — before driving back to Marrakech in the evening.

Important information

  • Good fitness required: expect 5-6 hours of hiking on day 1 and 10-12 hours on day 2 at altitude
  • From roughly December to April the summit is often snow-covered; crampons and ice axe are required and the route becomes more demanding
  • Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 3,000 m; tell your guide at once if you have headaches or nausea
  • Bring proper hiking boots, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, hat, gloves, headtorch and sunscreen
  • Not suitable for children under 14, pregnant women or people with heart or respiratory conditions
