Mountain Biking in the Atlas Mountains: Routes, Seasons and What to Expect

Mountain village and valley near Asni in the High Atlas

The Atlas Mountains offer excellent mountain biking on dirt roads and mule tracks between Berber villages, with long descents and big views. The most accessible areas from Marrakech are the Agafay plateau (easy to moderate), the Ouirgane and Asni valleys (moderate), and the Imlil area (challenging). Spring and autumn are the best seasons, and a local guide with a support vehicle is strongly recommended.

What to expect

  • Mostly dirt roads (pistes) and singletrack used by mules and villagers.
  • Big climbs at altitude; e-bikes are increasingly available.
  • Rocky, loose surfaces: full suspension or good hardtails help.
  • Encounters with shepherds, mules and children: slow down and greet them.

When to go

March to June and September to November. Summer is hot at low altitude but fine early in the morning in higher valleys. Winter brings snow above about 2,000 m.

Safety and practical tips

  • Ride with a local guide: tracks are unmarked and mobile signal is patchy.
  • Carry plenty of water, snacks and a repair kit.
  • Wear a helmet and gloves; bring sun protection.
  • Check bike hire quality (brakes, tyres, suspension) before setting off.
  • Respect fields and irrigation channels; ask before photographing villagers.

Other active options

Prefer two feet or an engine? Try the Imlil and Three Valleys hike, the 2-day Toubkal trek, kayaking on the Ouirgane day trip or a quad bike tour in Agafay. Compare walking routes in our Atlas hiking guide and remote valleys in Ait Bouguemez. Private mountain bike days can be arranged on request.
