Ait Bouguemez: Hiking Morocco's "Happy Valley" in the Central High Atlas

Green fields and earthen villages of the Ait Bouguemez valley in the Central High Atlas

Ait Bouguemez, nicknamed the "Happy Valley", is a green valley at around 1,800 m in the Central High Atlas, about 5 hours by road from Marrakech via Azilal. It is known for earthen Amazigh villages, irrigated fields, easy walks between hamlets, the Sidi Moussa granary, dinosaur footprints and treks towards Jbel M'Goun (about 4,070 m). Simple gîtes host visitors.

Why visit

  • Authentic village life with few tourists
  • Gentle valley walks suitable for families
  • Serious trekking towards M'Goun for experienced hikers
  • Cool summers and spectacular autumn colours

Highlights

Sidi Moussa granary

A former collective granary (agadir) perched on a conical hill in the middle of the valley, with wide views. It now holds a small exhibition about traditional life.

Village walks

Paths connect villages such as Tabant (the administrative centre), Ifrane and Agouti through fields of wheat, potatoes and apple and walnut trees, crossing irrigation channels.

Dinosaur footprints

Near Ibaqalliwn, fossilised dinosaur tracks are preserved in the rock; local guides can show you where.

Treks to M'Goun

Multi-day treks lead to the M'Goun massif, one of the highest in Morocco, and down through gorges. These require a licensed mountain guide and good fitness.

Getting there

From Marrakech, drive towards Beni Mellal, turn off to Azilal and follow the mountain road. The journey takes around 5 hours. A stop at the Ouzoud Waterfalls fits well on the way. Most visitors use a private driver; read about hiring a private driver.

When to go

Late spring to autumn. Winter brings snow and cold nights, and access roads can be difficult.

Combine with

For a shorter mountain experience closer to Marrakech, choose the Imlil and Three Valleys day trip or the Ouirgane day trip, or test your legs on the 2-day Toubkal trek. Our Atlas hiking guide compares the main areas. For geological background, see Wikipedia's M'Goun Geopark article.
