How to Get from Marrakech to Imlil: Taxi, Transfer or Tour

By · · Updated · 5 min read
Imlil village in the Atlas mountains, reached from Marrakech by road
In short: To get from Marrakech to Imlil (about 65 km, 1h30), the easiest option is a private transfer from your hotel. The cheapest is a shared grand taxi to Asni, then a second taxi to Imlil. A guided day trip includes transport, a guide and lunch if you are returning the same day.

Imlil is the trailhead village for Mount Toubkal and the most visited spot in the High Atlas, yet getting there without a tour is surprisingly confusing. This guide explains how to get from Marrakech to Imlil by private transfer, grand taxi or organised day trip, with approximate costs, journey times and the return trip from Imlil to Marrakech.

We drive this road almost daily between Marrakech, Asni, Imlil and our base in Ouirgane, so the advice below is based on how the route actually works on the ground.

How far is Imlil from Marrakech?

Imlil lies about 65 km south of Marrakech at around 1,740 m altitude. The journey normally takes 1 hour 30 minutes by car: roughly 45 minutes on a good road to Tahanaout and Asni, then about 17 km of winding mountain road up the Rheraya valley to Imlil. In winter, snow occasionally slows the last section.

Option 1: private transfer

A private transfer is the simplest way. Your driver collects you from your riad or hotel (or the nearest accessible point outside the medina), stops at the Asni viewpoint if you wish, and drops you at Imlil's main square, where mules and guides meet trekkers. It is the obvious choice if you are starting a trek with a backpack. We arrange transfers for guests on request through our contact page.

Option 2: grand taxi via Asni

Grand taxis are shared cars that leave when full. The usual pattern is:

  1. Take a petit taxi to the grand-taxi stand for Asni, south of the medina (ask your riad for the current location, as it occasionally moves).
  2. Share a grand taxi to Asni (about 1 hour). Taxis fill quickly in the morning.
  3. In Asni, change to a taxi or minibus for Imlil (about 30 minutes).
  4. If you want to leave sooner, you can pay for the empty seats.
  5. For the return from Imlil to Marrakech, ask at the main square in the morning or early afternoon; departures thin out later in the day.

This is the cheapest option but needs patience and some flexibility.

Option 3: a guided day trip

If your goal is to see Imlil rather than sleep there, a day tour covers transport, a guide and lunch. Our Imlil and Three Valleys day trip visits Asni, Imlil and the surrounding villages with a Berber lunch, and the private Ouirgane day trip combines a nearby valley with a lake. Option 4: driving yourself

The road is paved all the way and well signed from Asni. Drive carefully: the mountain section is narrow, with sharp bends, livestock and minibuses. Park at the bottom of Imlil if the village is busy, and avoid driving the descent after dark.

What you will see on the road

The drive is part of the experience. Leaving Marrakech, the road crosses flat farmland and olive groves with the snow-capped wall of the High Atlas ahead of you on clear mornings. Tahanaout, about 30 km out, is a busy market town and the first place where the landscape starts to fold into hills. After Tahanaout the road enters the Moulay Brahim gorge, a narrow red-rock canyon that marks the real entrance to the mountains, with roadside stalls selling pottery and fossils.

Asni sits on a plateau surrounded by orchards. Its Saturday souk is one of the largest weekly markets in the area, and a good stop if your timing works. From Asni, the left fork climbs to Imlil up the Rheraya valley, passing small villages built in red earth and stone, apple and cherry orchards, and terraces watered by traditional channels. Keep straight on the main road instead and you reach Ouirgane and, further on, the Tizi n'Test pass.

Arriving in Imlil: what to expect

Imlil is a small village with a central square where taxis stop, a handful of shops selling snacks and trekking gear, guesthouses and cafés with terraces. Mule handlers and guides gather here in the morning, and you may be approached by people offering their services. If you have already booked a guide, simply say so politely. Most guesthouses are a short walk uphill from the square, and some of the nicer ones in neighbouring hamlets such as Aremd are reached on foot or by mule only, so pack accordingly.

The Toubkal trail starts from the upper end of the village and passes Aremd before following the Mizane valley towards Sidi Chamharouch and the refuges. Day visitors can enjoy shorter walks to waterfalls and viewpoints within an hour of the square.

Imlil to Marrakech: getting back

The return works the same way in reverse. Toubkal trekkers usually descend to Imlil by early afternoon, so book the return transfer in advance for that time. Grand taxis from Imlil leave mostly in the morning; in the afternoon you may wait or need to pay for the whole car. Allow plenty of margin if you have an evening flight from Marrakech Menara.

Before you go: practical tips

  • Carry cash; there are limited ATMs beyond Asni.
  • Trekking to the Toubkal refuge requires a certified guide; arrange it before you arrive. Our Toubkal 2-day trek includes transport both ways.
  • Imlil is noticeably cooler than Marrakech; bring a fleece year-round.
  • If you are staying in the medina, cars cannot reach most riads: agree a pickup point such as a nearby square or gate the evening before.
  • Mobile coverage is good in Asni and Imlil but patchy higher up the valley; download offline maps before leaving.
  • Read the official Visit Morocco site for general travel information.
