Best Time to Visit Morocco: Month-by-Month Weather and Regional Guide
The best time to visit Morocco is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when Marrakech and Fes see daytime highs of roughly 22-30°C and the Sahara is warm by day without extreme heat. Winter is sunny but cold at night, and July-August is very hot inland but pleasant on the Atlantic coast.
Morocco's climate in one paragraph
Morocco has several climates in one country. The Atlantic coast (Casablanca, Rabat, Essaouira) is mild year-round thanks to the cool ocean current. The inland imperial cities (Marrakech, Fes, Meknes) are hot in summer and cool in winter. The High Atlas, rising to 4,167 m at Mount Toubkal, gets snow in winter. South of the mountains, the pre-Saharan valleys and dunes around Merzouga and Zagora are very hot in summer and near freezing on winter nights. So the "best" month depends on where you are going.
Seasons at a glance
| Season | Marrakech / Fes (day) | Sahara (Merzouga) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar-May) | approx. 22-30°C | warm days, mild nights | Excellent everywhere |
| Summer (Jun-Aug) | often 35-40°C+ | frequently above 40°C | Best for the coast and high Atlas |
| Autumn (Sep-Nov) | approx. 22-32°C | warm days, cooler nights | Excellent everywhere |
| Winter (Dec-Feb) | approx. 17-20°C, nights 3-7°C | mild days, nights near 0°C | Good for cities and desert, with warm layers |
Figures are typical averages; heatwaves and cold spells happen, so check a forecast before you pack.
Best time for the Sahara
For a desert trip to Erg Chebbi or Zagora, October to April is the most comfortable window. Days are warm and sunny and the camel ride at sunset is pleasant. From December to February, nights in camp can drop close to freezing, so good bedding and a warm layer matter. From June to August, temperatures regularly exceed 40°C by day; trips still run, but activities are kept to early morning and evening. Spring can bring the occasional sandstorm, usually short-lived.
Best time for the cities
Marrakech and Fes are at their best from March to May and from mid-September to November. In July and August, afternoons can pass 40°C, so plan medina walks early and rest at midday. Winter is underrated: bright blue skies, fewer crowds and lower hotel rates, though riads can be cold at night — ask whether rooms are heated. Rabat and Casablanca are mild year-round, and are rarely too hot even in summer.
Best time for the Atlas mountains
For trekking around Imlil and Toubkal, the main season runs from about April to October. Summer is the best time for the Toubkal summit without winter equipment, although it can still be cold at the top. From roughly December to March, snow covers the high peaks and ascents need crampons, ice axes and an experienced mountain guide. The Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), on the road from Marrakech to the south, can close briefly after heavy snowfall.
Best time for the coast
Summer is ideal on the Atlantic, when inland cities are hot. Essaouira typically stays around 22-25°C in July and August, but the trade winds are strong, which suits windsurfers and kitesurfers more than sunbathers. For surfing, the bigger swells around Taghazout and Imsouane come from roughly October to April.
Ramadan: should you avoid it?
Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year because it follows the lunar calendar. In 2027 it is expected to fall approximately from early February to early March, and in 2028 from late January to late February; exact dates depend on the moon sighting. Travelling during Ramadan is perfectly possible: monuments stay open, hotels serve meals, and the evenings after iftar are lively. Expect shorter opening hours for some shops and offices, fewer restaurants open by day outside tourist areas, and be discreet about eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight.
Festivals and events worth timing a trip around
- Marrakech Marathon: usually late January.
- Rose Festival, Kelaat M'Gouna: usually in May, after the Damask rose harvest in the Dades region.
- Fes Festival of World Sacred Music: usually late May or June.
- Gnaoua World Music Festival, Essaouira: usually in June.
- Imilchil Marriage Festival: late summer, in the High Atlas.
Dates vary year to year, so confirm them on the organisers' official websites before booking.
When is Morocco cheapest?
Prices are highest around Easter, the October half-term, Christmas and New Year, when European demand peaks. The quietest and often cheapest periods are January to early February (excluding New Year) and the height of summer inland. Late November and early December combine good weather with fewer visitors.

Month-by-month highlights
- January-February: crisp, sunny days in Marrakech; snow on the High Atlas; cold desert nights. Almond blossom in the Tafraoute region around February.
- March-April: green valleys, wildflowers in the Atlas foothills and comfortable temperatures almost everywhere. Easter is busy.
- May: warm and settled, the rose harvest in the Dades Valley, and long daylight hours.
- June: hot inland, pleasant on the coast; festival season in Essaouira and Fes.
- July-August: very hot in Marrakech, Fes and the desert; the best months for Essaouira, the coast and high-altitude trekking.
- September-October: heat eases, date harvest in the southern oases around October, excellent for all regions.
- November-December: quieter and cooler, with first snow on the peaks; good for the cities and the desert with a warm layer.
Rain is limited in most of Morocco, falling mainly between November and March in the north and on the Atlantic coast. Fes and Chefchaouen are wetter in winter than Marrakech, so pack a light waterproof for the north.
