Best Time to Visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco: A Month-by-Month Guide
The best time to visit the Sahara desert in Morocco is from March to May and from late September to November, when daytime temperatures around Merzouga are roughly 20 to 32°C and nights are cool but comfortable. Winter (December to February) brings mild, clear days but nights close to freezing, while summer (June to August) regularly pushes afternoon temperatures above 40°C.
What is the climate like in the Moroccan Sahara?
The Moroccan Sahara around Merzouga and Zagora has a hot desert climate with very low rainfall, often under 100 mm a year. The defining feature is the big daily temperature swing: the dry air and clear skies mean it can be 15 to 20°C colder at dawn than in the afternoon. That is why the "best" time depends as much on how you handle cold nights as on how you handle heat.

Spring (March to May): the most popular season
Spring combines warm days, comfortable nights and green oases along the Dades and Todra valleys. It is the busiest time on the desert routes, especially around Easter, so book early. The one drawback is wind: spring is when sandy winds and the occasional sandstorm are most likely, which can blur sunsets and make camp evenings dusty. A scarf and sunglasses solve most of it.
Summer (June to August): hot but possible
Afternoon temperatures in Merzouga are regularly above 40°C and the hot, dry chergui wind from the east can make it feel hotter still. That said, tours still run. Camel treks leave late in the afternoon, sunrise is spectacular, and nights in the dunes are warm enough to sleep outside the tent. If summer is your only option, choose a camp with good shade, drink plenty of water and plan for a slower pace. Summer is also a popular holiday period for Moroccan families, so the route can be lively.
Autumn (September to November): our favourite
From late September the heat eases and the light becomes soft and golden. Date harvest season in the oases (roughly October) adds colour to markets in Rissani and Erfoud. October is arguably the best single month: warm dunes, pleasant evenings and generally calmer winds than spring.
Winter (December to February): clear skies, cold nights
Winter days in the desert are often perfect for walking the dunes, with bright sunshine and temperatures around 17 to 20°C. Nights, however, can fall to around 0°C. Camps provide thick blankets, and luxury camps may offer heated tents, which is one reason winter travellers often choose an upgrade, as explained in our guide to luxury camps in Merzouga. Snow can occasionally close the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) for a few hours, so allow some flexibility.
Other factors to consider
Ramadan
Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar and moves about 10 to 11 days earlier each year. Tours run as normal and camps serve meals to visitors, but some roadside cafés close during daylight hours. Check the dates for your travel year.
Moon phase
For stargazing, plan your desert night close to the new moon. Around the full moon the dunes are beautifully lit, but you will see far fewer stars.
Rain and floods
Rain is rare, but sudden storms, mostly in late summer and autumn, can cause flash flooding in wadis. Tour operators monitor conditions and may adjust routes.
Holiday crowds
Christmas to New Year, Easter and European half-terms are the busiest periods. Camps fill up and prices rise, so book several weeks ahead.
What to pack for each season
In spring and autumn a light fleece is enough for evenings; in winter bring a down jacket, hat and gloves; in summer loose cotton and a wide-brimmed hat. Our full Sahara packing checklist breaks this down item by item.
Best time for specific activities
- Photography: October to April, when the air is clearer and the sun lower.
- Sandboarding: any season, but mornings in summer.
- Stargazing: new moon nights, ideally in autumn or winter.
- Exploring the dunes on foot: November to March. Our Erg Chebbi dunes guide suggests routes to the highest crests.
How long should you go for?
Whatever the season, Merzouga needs at least three days from Marrakech because of the distance, around 560 km. Our 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech runs year-round, with departure times adjusted to the season so the camel trek always falls in the golden hour. You can also browse all our desert tours or read about the region in our Sahara Desert travel guide.
Is there a bad time to go?
Not really, as long as you prepare for the conditions. The most challenging period is mid-July to mid-August, when heat makes long afternoons in the dunes uncomfortable and some travellers find the drive tiring. Even then, the early mornings and evenings are beautiful. In deep winter, the main challenge is the cold night in camp, which good bedding or a heated tent solves. If your dates are fixed, the right camp level, clothing and timing will matter far more than the month itself.
Sunrise and sunset times
Sunset in Merzouga falls at roughly 17:45 to 18:00 in December and around 19:45 to 20:00 in late June (Moroccan time, which can shift during Ramadan). Tours time the camel trek so you reach the dunes before sunset.
