Luxury Desert Camp in Merzouga: What You Get and Whether It Is Worth It
A luxury desert camp in Merzouga is a permanent tented camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes where each tent has a proper bed, private en-suite bathroom with hot shower and flushing toilet, electricity and quality furnishings, plus a sit-down dinner and usually live Amazigh music. At the time of writing, prices range roughly from €100 to over €300 per tent per night depending on season and level, so it is typically added as an upgrade to a desert tour rather than booked as a stand-alone stay.
Standard vs luxury desert camps: what is the difference?
Most Merzouga camps sit a camel ride of about 1 to 1.5 hours into the dunes, out of sight of the village. What changes between levels is comfort, privacy and service.
| Standard camp | Luxury camp | |
|---|---|---|
| Tent | Traditional woven tent, private for your group | Larger tent, often with wooden floor and rugs |
| Bed | Mattress on a frame or low platform, blankets | Double or twin beds with linen and duvets |
| Bathroom | Shared toilet and shower block | Private en-suite with hot water |
| Electricity | Limited, often solar lighting only | Sockets in the tent, sometimes heating or fans |
| Dining | Shared tagine dinner | Multi-course dinner, private tables |
| Access | Camel trek | Camel trek or 4x4 transfer, luggage delivered |
Neither is "right". A standard camp gives a simpler, more atmospheric night; a luxury camp removes most of the hardship. If comfort, a private bathroom or an easy night's sleep matter to you, the upgrade makes a real difference.
How much does a luxury camp in Merzouga cost?
Luxury camp rates vary widely. As a rough guide at the time of writing:
- Comfort or mid-range camps with en-suite tents: approximately €80 to €150 per tent per night, dinner and breakfast included.
- Luxury camps with larger tents and more refined dining: approximately €150 to €300 per tent per night.
- Top-end camps with suites, private terraces or exclusive locations: above €300 per night.
Peak periods (spring, autumn, Christmas and New Year) are the most expensive and fill first. Always confirm current rates and exactly what is included, as some camps charge separately for drinks, sandboarding boards or 4x4 transfers.
What a night in a luxury camp looks like
- Late afternoon: you leave your main luggage at a partner hotel in Merzouga or Hassi Labied and ride a camel into the dunes. Your overnight bag is usually taken to the camp by 4x4.
- Sunset: guides stop on a high ridge so you can climb a dune and watch the colours change across Erg Chebbi.
- Evening: mint tea on arrival, time to settle into your tent and shower, then dinner, typically soup or salads, a tagine or grilled meat and fruit.
- Night: drumming and songs around the fire, then stargazing. With almost no light pollution, the Milky Way is clearly visible on moonless nights.
- Sunrise: an early wake-up to climb the nearest dune, then breakfast and the ride back.
Where are the luxury camps located?
Camps are spread along the western and eastern sides of Erg Chebbi, which runs roughly north to south for about 22 to 28 km. Locations close to the tallest dunes give the most dramatic views. Some camps are a short walk from the edge of the erg, others are deeper in. For context on the dune field itself, the villages around it and what to do there, read our Erg Chebbi dunes guide.
How to add a luxury camp to a desert tour
Most travellers reach Merzouga on a multi-day tour, so the simplest way to stay in a luxury camp is to request an upgrade when booking. Our 3-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech spends its desert night in Erg Chebbi and can be booked with a camp upgrade subject to availability. The one-way route avoids driving back the way you came, and our guide to the Fes to Marrakech desert route covers each stage in detail.
Is a luxury camp worth the money?
It is worth it if...
- You are travelling as a couple or on a honeymoon and want privacy.
- You are travelling in winter, when heated tents and hot showers make a real difference on nights close to 0°C.
- You are travelling with older relatives or young children who need a proper bathroom.
- The desert night is the highlight of your trip and you want it to be special.
You may prefer a standard camp if...
- You are on a tight budget and happy with a shared bathroom for one night.
- You want the simpler, more traditional camp experience.
What to pack for a luxury camp
Even luxury camps sit in the open desert. Bring a warm layer for the evening, a scarf against wind-blown sand, a head torch, sunglasses and a small bag you can carry. Our complete Sahara packing list covers season-specific items. Toiletries and towels are provided in most luxury camps, but ask to be sure.
Tips for booking
- Book early for March to May, October to November and the Christmas and New Year period.
- Ask whether the camp is reached by camel, by 4x4, or both.
- Check whether dinner drinks are included. Alcohol is not served at every camp.
- If stargazing matters to you, check the moon phase for your dates; nights around the new moon are darkest.
You can compare all our Sahara departures, from short Agafay evenings to multi-day routes, on the desert tours from Marrakech and Fes page.
Food, drinks and dietary needs
Dinner in a luxury camp is usually a set menu of Moroccan dishes, with vegetarian options available on request. Tell your operator in advance about allergies, vegan or gluten-free diets so the camp kitchen, which is supplied from Merzouga, can prepare. Bottled water is usually available; alcohol depends on the camp's licence, so ask before you travel rather than assume.
