How to Plan a Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech: Route, Timing and Costs
A Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga needs at least three days, because the dunes sit roughly 560 km away across the High Atlas and the driving time is around 9 to 10 hours each way. The standard plan is: day one over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to the Dades Valley, day two via the Todra Gorge to Merzouga and a camel trek to a desert camp, day three back to Marrakech. If you only have two days, Zagora is the closer but less dramatic alternative.
How far is the Sahara from Marrakech?
Morocco's big sand seas lie on the far side of the Atlas Mountains, in the pre-Saharan south-east. The main options and their approximate distances from Marrakech by road are:
- Merzouga (Erg Chebbi): about 560 km, around 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops.
- Zagora (small dunes near Tinfou and Oulad Driss): about 360 km, roughly 7 hours.
- Erg Chigaga (beyond M'Hamid): about 450 km, with the last 50 to 60 km on rough piste that requires a 4x4.
Every one of these routes crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, a well-engineered but winding road with hairpins on both sides. It is safe in normal conditions, but in winter snow can occasionally close it for a few hours. For a deeper comparison of the two most popular choices, read our guide to Merzouga versus Zagora.
How many days do you need?
Two days: Zagora
A two-day trip reaches the Draa Valley and the modest dunes around Zagora. It is a good taster, but the dunes are low and scattered compared with the towering sand of Erg Chebbi, and you spend most of both days in the vehicle.
Three days: Merzouga, the classic
Three days is the minimum we recommend for Merzouga. It splits the outbound drive into two stages with an overnight in the Dades Valley and gives you a sunset and a sunrise in the dunes. Our 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga follows exactly this rhythm.
Four days or more
With a fourth day you can add a full rest day at Merzouga (visiting Khamlia, Rissani market or the seasonal lake at Dayet Srji), or finish in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech, which removes the long drive back.
What does the classic 3-day route look like?
| Day | Route | Approx. driving | Key stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley | 7–8 h | Atlas pass (2,260 m), UNESCO ksar of Ait Benhaddou, Skoura palm grove |
| 2 | Dades – Tinghir – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga | 5–6 h | Todra Gorge, fossil workshops, camel trek at sunset |
| 3 | Merzouga – Alnif – N'Kob – Ouarzazate – Marrakech | 9–10 h | Sunrise over the dunes, Draa or Anti-Atlas scenery |
Ait Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987 and is worth a guided walk of about an hour. In the Todra Gorge the limestone walls rise to around 300 m and close in to only a few dozen metres apart at the narrowest point, which you can walk through on foot.
Shared, private or self-drive?
- Shared small-group tour: the most economical way. You travel in an air-conditioned minibus with other travellers on a fixed itinerary.
- Private tour: your own driver and vehicle, flexible stops and timing, better for families and photographers. Cost rises with the vehicle, not per person, so it gets good value for groups of four or more.
- Self-drive: perfectly possible on paved roads, but the final camp transfer usually requires a camel or a 4x4, and you still need to organise the camp in advance.
What is usually included, and what is not?
A well-structured Merzouga tour normally includes hotel or riad pickup in Marrakech, transport with a driver, one night in a guesthouse in the Dades or Todra area, one night in a desert camp, two dinners and two breakfasts, and the camel trek to and from camp. Typical extras are lunches and drinks, optional local guides at Ait Benhaddou and the Todra Gorge, travel insurance and tips. Always ask whether the camp tent is private or shared, and whether it has an en-suite bathroom.
How much does a Sahara tour from Marrakech cost?
At the time of writing, shared 3-day tours to Merzouga with standard camps start from around €145 per person with us. Private tours cost more and vary with group size and camp level, and luxury camps with private bathrooms add a supplement. Budget approximately €8 to €15 per lunch en route, plus around 20 to 30 MAD per person for local guides at Ait Benhaddou if you use one. Prices change with season and fuel costs, so always confirm the current rate when you book.
When is the best time to go?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are the most comfortable, with daytime temperatures of roughly 20 to 30°C. From June to August the dunes regularly exceed 40°C in the afternoon, while December and January bring pleasant days but nights close to freezing. Our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit the Sahara in Morocco covers wind, sandstorms and holiday periods in detail.
What should you pack?
Keep a small overnight bag for the camp night: the camels carry limited weight and your main luggage usually stays in the vehicle. Essentials include a warm layer for the evening, a headscarf or buff against sand, sunglasses, sunscreen, a head torch and a power bank. Our full Sahara desert packing list has season-by-season details.
Practical tips for a smooth trip
- Book at least a few days ahead in spring, autumn and around Christmas and Easter, when camps fill up.
- Bring cash in dirhams for lunches, tips and souvenirs; ATMs exist in Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Rissani but not at the camps.
- If you are prone to motion sickness, sit near the front and take tablets before the Tichka pass.
- Camel treks last roughly 1 to 1.5 hours each way; if you prefer not to ride, ask for a 4x4 transfer.
- Check your travel insurance covers remote areas and activities such as sandboarding.
