Le Jardin Secret Marrakech: A Hidden Islamic Garden in the Medina
Le Jardin Secret is a restored riad garden complex in the Mouassine district of the Marrakech medina, opened to the public in 2016. It has two gardens: an Islamic garden laid out in four parts with water channels, and an exotic garden with plants from around the world. Climb the tower for a view over the medina rooftops. A visit takes 45 minutes to an hour.
History
The site was occupied in the Saadian period, and the current residence dates mainly from the 19th century, when it belonged to powerful figures of the Marrakech court. After decades of decline, it was restored with traditional techniques and materials, including the ancient water system fed by the khettara network, and reopened as a garden and exhibition space.
What to see
- The Islamic garden: a symmetrical layout divided by water channels, planted with fruit trees and aromatic plants, inspired by the Koranic image of paradise.
- The exotic garden: cacti, palms and plants from several continents.
- The tower: views over the Koutoubia, rooftops and, on clear days, the Atlas.
- Exhibitions: on Islamic gardens and the hydraulic history of Marrakech.
Practical tips
- Located on Rue Mouassine, about 10 minutes' walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa.
- Go early or late afternoon for calm; the café inside is a pleasant break.
- Combine with the souks, the Mouassine fountain and the Ben Youssef Madrasa.
- The tower may have a small extra fee and narrow stairs.
How it compares
Le Jardin Secret is the easiest garden to fit into a medina day; the Majorelle Garden is more famous and further away in Gueliz, and the Menara Gardens are a wide historic olive grove with Atlas views. Include it in your one-day or 3-day itinerary, or on a guided medina walk. The garden's official site is lejardinsecretmarrakech.com.
