One Day in Marrakech: How to See the Best of the City in 24 Hours

Rooftops of the Marrakech medina with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon

With one day in Marrakech, start early at the Majorelle Garden, then walk the medina: Koutoubia, Bahia Palace, lunch, the souks and the Ben Youssef Madrasa. Rest on a rooftop in the late afternoon and finish at Jemaa el-Fnaa for sunset and street food. A local guide for the medina part saves a lot of time.

Hour-by-hour plan

8:30Majorelle Garden at opening (book a time slot online)
10:00Taxi to the Koutoubia Mosque and gardens
10:45Walk to the Bahia Palace via the Kasbah or Riad Zitoun
12:00Optional: Saadian Tombs (if the queue is short)
13:00Lunch on a terrace near the Mellah or Jemaa el-Fnaa
14:30The souks: spices, lanterns, leather; Ben Youssef Madrasa
16:30Mint tea on a rooftop café
18:00Jemaa el-Fnaa at sunset
19:30Dinner at the food stalls or a street food tour

Tips to make it work

  • Take a guide for the medina: a guided walking tour covers the key sights efficiently and keeps touts away.
  • Evening: the street food tour by night is a fun, safe way to taste Marrakech.
  • Prefer nature? Swap the afternoon for an Agafay desert sunset with dinner (pickup in the afternoon).
  • Wear comfortable shoes and carry small dirham notes for entry fees and taxis.
  • In summer, move the souks to the late afternoon and rest at midday.

Have more time?

With two or three days you can add a day in the Atlas Mountains or the coast: see our 3-day Marrakech itinerary and 20 best things to do in Marrakech. For monument details, read the Bahia Palace, Koutoubia and Majorelle Garden guides.

The medina's history and significance are summarised by UNESCO's Medina of Marrakesh page.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Marrakech?

One day is enough to see the main highlights if you start early and use a guide, but two or three days allow a more relaxed visit and a day trip.

What should I not miss in Marrakech in one day?

The Majorelle Garden, the Koutoubia, the Bahia Palace, the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa at sunset.

Can I visit Marrakech on a stopover?

Yes. The airport is only 15–20 minutes from the medina, so a long stopover allows a half-day visit.

Should I hire a guide for one day in Marrakech?

It is recommended: a guide saves time in the medina's maze and explains the history of each monument.
