Erg Chigaga: Morocco's Wild Desert Dunes Beyond M'Hamid
Erg Chigaga is a large, remote field of sand dunes in southern Morocco, about 50–60 km west of the oasis village of M'Hamid El Ghizlane at the end of the Draa Valley. Reaching it requires a 4x4 drive of around 2 hours on desert tracks, after a 9–10 hour road trip from Marrakech, so most trips last at least 3–4 days. It is wilder and less visited than Merzouga's Erg Chebbi.
Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)
| Erg Chigaga | Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) | |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Asphalt to M'Hamid, then about 2 h by 4x4 off-road | Asphalt to the edge of the dunes |
| From Marrakech | Usually 3–4 days | 3 days |
| Atmosphere | Remote, few camps, real sense of isolation | More camps and visitors, more services |
| Dune height | High dunes, among the tallest in Morocco | Up to about 150 m |
| Price | Higher because of 4x4 logistics | More affordable, more choice |
For most first-time visitors with limited time, Merzouga is the practical choice; see our Erg Chebbi guide and Merzouga vs Zagora.
How to get to Erg Chigaga
The road from Marrakech crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ouarzazate, then follows the Draa Valley through Agdz and Zagora to M'Hamid, where the asphalt ends. From there, 4x4 vehicles follow sandy and stony tracks past dry lakes (such as Iriki, in the national park area) and small oases to the dunes. Do not attempt the off-road section without an experienced desert driver.
What to expect
- Fixed camps hidden among the dunes, from simple to comfortable
- Camel rides and dune walks at sunset and sunrise
- Exceptional night skies thanks to the absence of light pollution; read stargazing in the Sahara
- Very few other travellers, especially outside holiday periods
Best time to go
October to April. Summer is extremely hot, and spring winds can bring sand into the air. Winter nights are cold, so bring warm layers: see what to pack for the Sahara.
Is Erg Chigaga right for you?
Choose Erg Chigaga if you want solitude and adventure and have 4 days or more. With 2–3 days, a 2-day trip to Zagora or a 3-day tour to Merzouga is more realistic; compare costs in Sahara desert tour prices. Private multi-day tours including Erg Chigaga can be arranged on request.
