What drives the price of a desert tour

1. Shared or private

Shared tours run in minibuses of up to about 16 travellers and are the cheapest option. Private tours give you your own vehicle and driver, flexible stops and timing, and cost more per person, especially for couples. For a group of four to six, private tours become much more affordable per head. Our guide on how to choose a Morocco tour covers the trade-offs.

2. Destination: Merzouga, Zagora or Agafay

Merzouga, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is about 9–10 hours' drive from Marrakech, so it needs at least 3 days. Zagora is closer (around 7 hours) and fits into 2 days, but its dunes are smaller. Agafay is a stone desert just outside Marrakech: no sand dunes, but an easy half-day trip. Compare them in Merzouga vs Zagora and our Agafay desert guide.

3. Camp level

Standard camps offer Berber tents, blankets and shared or simple private bathrooms. Comfort and luxury camps add private tents with real beds, en-suite bathrooms, electricity and better dinners, typically adding €40–€150 per person per night. Read luxury desert camp in Merzouga to decide if the upgrade is worth it.

4. Season

Prices rise around Christmas, New Year and Easter, and spring and autumn are the busiest seasons. Summer can be cheaper but very hot in the dunes; see the best time to visit the Sahara.

5. Starting city

Tours from Fes are slightly shorter to Merzouga than from Marrakech. One-way tours, such as Fes to Marrakech via the desert, save you a long return drive and are excellent value if you are travelling across Morocco.

What is usually included

  • Hotel or riad pickup and drop-off
  • Air-conditioned transport with a licensed driver
  • Accommodation: one night in a hotel or kasbah and one night in a desert camp (3-day tours)
  • Dinners and breakfasts
  • Camel ride to and from the camp, usually at sunset and sunrise

What usually costs extra

  • Lunches (around €8–€15 per meal in roadside restaurants)
  • Drinks, including bottled water
  • Local guides at Ait Benhaddou or the Todra Gorge (optional)
  • Sandboarding, 4x4 excursions or quad bikes in the dunes
  • Tips for the driver and camel guide: see our tipping guide

How to avoid overpaying (or underpaying)

  • Compare what is included, not just the headline price: a cheap tour with expensive lunches and a remote camp can end up costing more.
  • Ask how many hours you actually spend in the dunes and whether the camp is in Erg Chebbi or outside it.
  • Book with an operator that lets you pay on the day or offers free cancellation, so your money is not at risk.
  • Avoid touts selling tours in the street or at Jemaa el-Fnaa without a written programme.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech?

A shared 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour costs roughly €100–€180 per person, including transport, two nights' accommodation, dinners, breakfasts and a camel ride. Our 3-day Sahara tour starts from €145.

Usually lunches, drinks, optional local guides, extra activities such as sandboarding or 4x4 rides, and tips for the driver and camel guide.

What is the cheapest way to see the Sahara from Marrakech?

A shared 2-day trip to Zagora is the cheapest overnight desert experience. For a taste of the desert without staying overnight, an Agafay desert sunset tour costs much less and takes only half a day.
