The route, stage by stage
Marrakech to Ouarzazate (about 200 km, 4 hours)
The N9 road climbs into the High Atlas to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, the highest paved road pass in the range, with hairpin bends and Berber villages on the slopes. A short detour leads to the ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and famous film location. Ouarzazate, the gateway to the south, has film studios and the Taourirt kasbah.
Ouarzazate to the Dades and Todra valleys (about 170 km)
The road follows the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" through Skoura's palm grove and Kelaat M'Gouna, known for its roses. Many tours spend the night in the Dades Valley or near the Todra Gorge, where cliffs up to around 300 m high close in around a river.
Todra to Merzouga (about 190 km)
The last stretch crosses stony plains via Tinejdad, Erfoud and Rissani, the historic centre of the Tafilalt oasis, before the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. A camel caravan then takes you to the camp for sunset.

Option 1: a 3-day desert tour (recommended)
A 3-day tour is the most practical way to cover the distance: day one to the Dades Valley via Ait Benhaddou, day two through the Todra Gorge to the dunes and a night in a desert camp, day three back to Marrakech. Transport, accommodation, dinners, breakfasts and the camel ride are included. Our 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga follows this route. If you are continuing north, the one-way Fes to Marrakech desert tour works in reverse and avoids a long return drive.
Option 2: a private driver
A private driver lets you stop when you want, choose your hotels and add nights, for example two nights in the desert. It costs more but becomes good value for three or more people. Read hiring a private driver in Morocco for how it works.
Option 3: the bus
Supratours and CTM run buses from Marrakech to Merzouga or nearby Rissani, often overnight, taking around 12–13 hours with changes or long stops. It is cheap but tiring, and you still need to arrange a camp and camel ride on arrival. Check current timetables on the Supratours website before you plan.
Option 4: driving yourself
Roads are paved all the way and generally in good condition. The Tichka pass demands care because of bends, trucks and occasional snow in winter. Avoid driving after dark, keep fuel above half in the south, and expect police checkpoints. Leave the car at your camp's parking: only 4x4s and camels go into the dunes.
Is Merzouga worth the long drive?
Yes, if you want real Saharan sand dunes: Erg Chebbi's dunes reach about 150 m and change colour from gold to deep orange at sunset. If you only have one or two days, consider Zagora or the Agafay desert instead; our comparison Merzouga vs Zagora will help, and Sahara desert tour prices explains what each option costs.
