Quad biking in Marrakech takes place mainly in two areas: the Palmeraie palm grove on the city's northern edge (20-30 minutes from the medina) and the stony Agafay desert about 40 km south-west (around 45 minutes). Sessions last 1-2 hours on automatic quads with a guide, no licence or experience is usually needed, and half-day packages with hotel transfers and mint tea cost approximately €35-70 per person; our quad and camel combo starts from €45.

Palmeraie or Agafay: which is better for quad biking?

Neither area has tall sand dunes - those are found in the real Sahara at Merzouga or Zagora, several hours' drive away. What you get near Marrakech is fast, dusty fun on tracks in dramatic scenery, with no need for an overnight trip.

How does a quad session work?

  1. Pickup. Your driver collects you from your hotel or riad. Morning sessions usually start around 09:00, afternoon ones around 14:00-15:00.
  2. Kit and briefing. At the base camp you receive a helmet, goggles and a chèche - the long scarf you wrap around your face against dust. The guide explains the controls: thumb throttle, brakes, and the golden rule of keeping your distance.
  3. Practice lap. A short loop so everyone feels comfortable before leaving.
  4. The ride. You follow the guide in single file for around 1-2 hours, often with a stop at a village home for mint tea and bread.
  5. Return. Back at base, you can wash off the dust before the transfer back to Marrakech.

Do you need a driving licence or experience?

Most operators do not require a driving licence for guided sessions on private tracks, and the quads are automatic, so beginners manage well. Drivers usually need to be adults; children can ride as passengers behind a parent, and some bases have small quads for older children. Age limits vary, so ask when booking. If you are nervous, you can share a quad and swap halfway.

Is quad biking in Marrakech safe?

It is safe if you ride within your limits and follow the guide. Most incidents happen when riders speed, overtake or ride too close to the quad in front. Good practice:

  • Keep at least 10-15 m from the quad ahead - more in dust.
  • Slow down on sand and before bends; quads can tip if you turn sharply at speed.
  • Keep your feet on the footrests at all times.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers motorised activities.
  • Don't ride if you are pregnant or have back or neck problems.

What to wear

  • Long trousers and closed shoes - trainers are fine; no sandals.
  • Clothes you don't mind getting dusty (and possibly slightly stained).
  • Sunglasses under the goggles if you wear glasses; contact lenses can be uncomfortable in dust.
  • A light jacket in winter: mornings in the Palmeraie can be around 5-10 °C from December to February.
  • Sunscreen and a bottle of water in summer, when afternoon temperatures often exceed 35 °C - choose the morning session from June to September.

Morning or afternoon session?

From June to September, choose the morning: afternoon temperatures in Marrakech regularly climb above 35 °C and dust is at its worst. From October to April, the afternoon session is often more attractive, with softer light for photos among the palms and a chance to finish near sunset in the Agafay. In winter, pickup times shift earlier in the afternoon because the sun sets around 17:30-18:00.

Tipping and extras

Your guide and the base staff appreciate a small tip at the end if you enjoyed the ride - approximately 20-50 MAD per person is common, but it is always your choice. Photos taken by staff on the ride are usually offered for sale afterwards; there is no obligation to buy. If you are travelling as a family or group, ask for a private session so the pace suits everyone.

Quad, buggy or camel?

If you prefer four wheels and a steering wheel, many bases also offer buggies (two-seat off-road vehicles), which cost more but feel more stable. For a slower pace, the classic combination is a quad session followed by a camel ride of 45 minutes to an hour among the palms - a good mix of adrenaline and calm, and ideal for groups with different tastes. Our camel ride guide explains the options from Marrakech to the Sahara.

How much does quad biking in Marrakech cost?

Prices depend on duration, area and whether transfers and extras are included. As an approximate guide at the time of writing:

  • 1-hour Palmeraie session with transfers: approximately €30-45 per person
  • 2-hour session or quad + camel combo: approximately €45-70
  • Agafay sunset quad with dinner at a camp: approximately €60-90

A shared quad (two people) is cheaper per person. Check exactly what is included: transfers, tea stop, riding time on the quad (not total excursion time) and the number of riders per guide.

Make it a full adventure day

A morning quad session leaves the afternoon free. Early risers can start with a hot air balloon ride over Marrakech and ride quads after lunch. If you want to see the mountains on foot rather than on wheels, our Atlas Mountains hiking guide suggests routes within 1-2 hours of the city. More ideas are in our Marrakech travel guide.
